02 / SMART HOME / LIGHTING / AV / CONTROL4

A media wall
with a secret.

A finished feature wall with a recessed television, illuminated niches and 7.2 Dolby surround sound. Behind the timber pelmet, a projector screen waits to turn the room into a cinema.

COMPLETE INCONTROL DESIGN & INSTALLATION

One wall.
Two ways to watch.

InControl designed and installed the whole technical package for this room as part of a smaller Control4 project: the television, the surround sound, the lighting, the electrical work and the controls.

Day to day, it's a media wall. Drop the projector screen and it becomes a cinema room, using the same remote and the same controls.

This finished media wall was also shared in InControl’s original August 2022 project post ↗.

THE PROJECT / ENGINEERING IN PRACTICE

The decisions behind the result.

01 / THE BRIEF

Not a TV surrounded by separate fittings.

The client wanted the television, the lighting and the display niches to read as one feature, rather than a TV hung between unrelated lights. They also wanted a proper big-screen experience without giving the room over to a cinema full-time.

02 / WHAT WE DID

A media wall and a cinema in one room.

The television sits centred in a dark feature finish, with RGBW LED strip lighting the recessed niches either side and the detail above. The room has 7.2 Dolby surround sound, with the local AV equipment in a cabinet in the opposite corner. The main Control4 equipment is in a rack in the garage.

Behind the timber pelmet is a motorised projector screen, with an Epson projector mounted in a bulkhead on the opposite side of the room. With only a 3.5 m throw available, it had to be a short-throw model.

03 / HOW IT WORKS

Drop the screen. The room follows.

Control4 handles the switch. Lower the projector screen and the system turns the television off and the projector on. Channel changing and everything else works exactly as before.

Raise the screen and it reverses: the projector turns off and the television comes back on. Nobody has to think about which device is which.

04 / THE RESULT

The wall as one installation.

A finished wall with concealed cabling, integrated display lighting and AV arranged as one installation, plus a full cinema that only appears when it's wanted.

THE TECHNICAL DETAIL / FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT

Behind the finish.

What sits behind the wall, the pelmet and the ceiling to make the room work as one system.

01 / SOUND

7.2 Dolby surround

A seven-channel surround system with two subwoofers, with the local AV equipment in a cabinet in the opposite corner of the room.

02 / LIGHTING

RGBW strip on DMX

RGBW LED strip in the niches and the detail above the wall, run on DMX control so colour and white can be set and recalled as scenes.

03 / PICTURE

Hidden screen, short throw

A motorised projector screen behind the timber pelmet, with an Epson short-throw projector in a bulkhead opposite, chosen for a 3.5 m throw.

04 / CONTROL

Control4 logic

The main Control4 rack is in the garage. Screen down switches TV off and projector on, and screen up reverses it, on the same remote.
